Based on the polish litterary fantasy by Andrzej Sapkowski, who was adapted into a video game, and is now a television series by Netflix starring Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan.
The premise: Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.
Review: I was familiar with the names, The Witcher, and Geralt, but to me it was a video game. So for me who didn’t know much about this world, the way the story slowly unfolded made it was easyish to grasp. Beside I sat through Game of Thrones and Penny Dreadful, which this show reminds me of. You get to see the characters from where they started and go on a journey with them, all the while having to piece the story together.
The way women are portrayed in the show is pretty good to me, there are all kinds of women represented, there are not just one thing, they are layered and different but most of the nudity in the show are done by women. Granted the nudity is often tasteful, not too sexual, it feels natural but again it’s mostly women.
Honestly from episode one, I had a feeling that there was some back and forth in the telling of the story but it was almost half way through, that my suspicions we confirmed. The story is crafted in such a way that you get to fully understand what’s going on. The passage of time is really hard to tell on this show. It is casually mentioned by characters at times but you have to actively remind yourself that for this character that much time has passed since last you saw them.
Let’s talk about the cast, they are very well cast. Anya Chalotra does a great job with Yennefer, her origin story is something that I wasn’t expecting but loved throughout. Yennerfer is such a good character and they’ve found the actress to bring her to life. Freya Allan’s character, Cirilla, is just like the overall story, slow to figure out and like, then once you’re in you’re hooked. Jodhi May, Adam Levy, Mimi Ndiweni, and MyAnna Buring are also quite the standouts. The cast whole did a great job.
This is a full fantasy show with beautiful landscapes, amazing sword fighting, and very well realized special effects and monster designs. I can’t wait to see season 2 what about you?
